Biopolymers – Europe needs to catch up, Germany investing

April 18th, 2010 | By Thorsten Holtz in Biocomposites | 1 Comment »

Following double-figure annual growth rates posted in recent years, the global economic crisis put the brakes on the rapid growth of wood-plastics-composites (WPCs) in 2009. But only temporarily as, according to the AVK (Federation of Reinforced Plastics) experts, these materials have the potential to act as substitutes for glass fibres and, thanks to their specific areas of application, can help open up entirely new markets.  In 2007 the WPC market volume for Europe as a whole was 120,000 tonnes. In contrast to many markets which are already saturated, there is potential for strong growth here.

Experts are predicting that biopolymers (polymers based on starch, cellulose and PLA) will Read Full Post

When the new Airbus A350 XWB (XWB stands for eXtra Wide Body) takes off on its maiden flight in two years time, this will also represent a milestone for the composites industry. 50% of the fuselage of the wide-bodied aircraft, which is being developed as a competitor to the Boeing 787, is made of composite materials. Last summer, Airbus purchased Read Full Post

1Biofuel-Pionier_Smudo_zeigt_was_morgen_bewegtFlax, hemp and cotton  – for three decades the racing team around Fanta Vier frontman Smudo has been demonstrating that biofibres can help to win great prizes even in motor sports. The BioConcept Car project by Four Motors GmbH from Reutlingen successfully in endurance challenges with racing cars made with natural fibre-reinforced plastics.

For its pioneering role in the field of natural fibre-reinforced plastics, the BioConcept Car project is now granted the COMPOSITES Pioneer Award 2009. The prize will be awarded during the COMPOSITES EUROPE trade fair in Stuttgart on 27 October.

Capabilities of renewable raw materials

The project is the only one of its kind worldwide: the body shell of the racing car used is made almost completely from bio-composite materials. doors, mudguards, bonnet, bumpers, wings and the boot lid are made from natural fibre-reinforced plastics. In 2006, racing team operator Four Motors GmbH used a racing car with a body shell made from plant fibres for the first time. The design of the first-generation BioConcept car was based on a Mustang GT RTD.

Biomaterials: from a pencil sharpener to a peg

The innovation prize for the young group of biomaterials will be awarded this year for the second time (Photo: Coperion). The experts of the AVK – Industrievereinigung Verstärkte Kunststoffe e.V. forecast an annual double-digit percentage growth rate for natural fibre reinforced plastics as well as for wood-plastic composites (WPC).  The reasons for this are the aspects of energy saving during production and the associated reduction in carbon dioxide.

The most important applications are the automobile, construction, furniture as well as industrial and consumer goods. Even so, the use of natural fibre reinforced plastics is stagnating in the automobile sector in the German market which currently accounts for 30,000 tons annually.
